The University of Chakwal organized a special ceremony to observe Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir. The ceremony was presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Farrukh Arsalan Siddiqui, while Brigadier (Retired) Professor Dr. Hamood ur Rehman attended as the Chief Guest. A large number of faculty members, students, officers, and employees of the University participated in the event.
The ceremony focused on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir following the Indian government's abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution of India on August 5, 2019, and the subsequent revocation of the region's special constitutional status. The speakers discussed the restrictions imposed in the region, disruption of communication services, and concerns regarding human rights, which have attracted international attention.
Students also participated in the ceremony and shared their views on the historical, political, and humanitarian dimensions of the Kashmir issue, highlighting the implications of the abrogation of Article 370.
Addressing the gathering, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Farrukh Arsalan Siddiqui spoke in detail about the historical significance of Kashmir and the importance of the Kashmir issue. He said that Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir provides an opportunity to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir and to highlight the historical and political significance of the issue. He stated that the revocation of the special constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir by India represents an example of oppression and coercion.
The Vice Chancellor further stated that separatist movements already exist in different parts of India and observed that continued disregard for people's rights could potentially lead to India facing challenges similar to those that contributed to the disintegration of the Soviet Union. He emphasized that universities have a fundamental role in promoting awareness, research, and fact-based dialogue among young people so that students remain informed about national and international affairs. He urged students to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir and develop a deeper understanding of the various dimensions of the Kashmir issue.
Chief Guest Brigadier (Retired) Professor Dr. Hamood ur Rehman shed light on the background of the abrogation of Article 370, its political and social implications, and the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized the need for continued attention to the Kashmir issue at both national and international levels. He appreciated the University of Chakwal administration for organizing the event and encouraged students to continue participating in intellectual and awareness-oriented activities on important national and international issues.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, a solidarity walk was held from the University Gate towards Talagang Road. Participants carried banners and expressed solidarity with the people of Kashmir. The walk concluded with a collective prayer for Kashmir and the Muslims living there.
